If you are an active senior like my husband and I some times you need a little extra assist in getting that hike in. Generally, I hike every single day getting anywhere from 2-3 miles in. This is in terrain that is flat and sandy to steep inclines with lots of rocks. I have done alot of activities in my life that have not been especially kind to my body. Therefore, after walking for a short distance without the assistance of Hiking poles my lower back starts to hurt. If I bend over and stretch my lower back I am able to continue my walk but will have to repeat this many times. Additionally, the older I get my balance really is not what it used to be. Just years ago I could jump from rock to rock like a freaking goat. Now I look at stepping up on small rocks with a little trepidation. I decided to start trying out hiking poles to help with my balance and take some stress off my lower back. They definitely helped! I am able to walk/hike longer distances before having to stretch my lower back and can use the poles to hold onto when I do my stretch. Balance no problem at all. It is definitely worth trying.
Walking poles have several benefits such as improving posture, reducing pain in your joints and lower back. Feeling more secure in hiking different terrains, burns additional calories. (We all need that because you know how our weight increases as we get older).
I also feel more secure in wilderness areas because it is an added layer of protection. I have alittle holster I made that I attached to the pole and put a small can of pepper spray in.
I have tried lots of poles but Trailbuddy are hands down my favorite. Easy to adjust and lock in. Soft cork handle and lots of colors. Very affordable. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars
